When Sir Stamford Raffles first left Singapore, he placed it in the hands of Sir William Farquhar. Under Farquhar’s laissez faire command, the sleepy island boomed and gained a reputation as one of the most important trading ports between Asia and Europe. It also established itself as a hub for the regional drug trade. Today we toast to his memory with a drink that’s as colourful as the man himself.
